Ask a DJ – Top Music Trends with Asher Grier
The Capen House is kicking off its first blog and what a better way to begin than by talking about music! It’s one of the best ways to personalize your wedding while incorporating your friends and family, too.
After you’ve enjoyed the Capen House’s stunning lakefront views for your Ceremony and dining, it’s time to move inside for dancing. The Grand Hall is a great space for dancing, and your DJ can set up some extra up-lighting to help with the mood.
One of the DJs we love to work with is Asher Grier of A-List DJ Entertainment. He’s a long-time music veteran and master of the playlist. So put on Dua Lipa’s “Start Now”– it’s one of Asher’s fave songs right now — and read some of his tips below!
When selecting your playlist, Asher says to remember that what you love listening to while you are driving around in your car may not be the best fit for your reception. “Notoriety is king,” he says. “You want to pick songs that people know well and will dance to!”
In addition to picking out 10-15 solid dance songs, Asher recommends selecting a few songs with a nod to your families’ heritage, saying, “It is respectful and thoughtful to honor family tradition with at least a song or two!” Be sure to give your DJs some advance notice so they will be able to have those unique songs on-hand for your guests to enjoy.
Asher’s favorite part about being a DJ is the crowd interaction and “mixing music on beat, to achieve a heightened level of energy on the dance floor.”
With that in mind, here are some of Asher’s top picks:
Most popular songs played at a Reception:
“Uptown Funk” — Bruno Mars
“Turn Down for What” — Lil John
“I Wanna Dance with Somebody” — Whitney Houston
“Hotel Room Service” – Pitbull
“It’s Tricky” — Run-DMC
Best First Dance song: “Make You Feel My Love” — Adele
Best Mother/Son Dance song: “How Sweet It Is” — James Taylor
Best Father/Daughter Dance song: “It’s a Wonderful World” — Louis Armstrong
